Why I Would Rather Get a Dirt Cheap Room than a Comp in Vegas

Finally being OK with discounted rates...(story-length read)

There are a number of reasons why I am finally OK with discounted rates. I have made multiple voyages to Mecca on the strength of establishing my play and seeing what kind of comps it could generate. This was considered my fun, my adventure. I learned a lot about what it took to get comps on this journey and I think I could probablywrite a book. However, not everything I learned I put into practice, so I did not exactly benefit from or practice that knowledge. Perhaps I would have to before writing that book. Such is life.

Why I'm OK...

-Made coin-in of $200 at strat in 1 hour, $700 in 4 hours at caesars, $700 in 4 hours at MB, $1095 in 3.5 hours at fremont on my last trip, and none of them gave me comps except Strat. Caesars is more understandable because I short-played them a lot in the past and their comp threshold may be high, and I had used 2 comped hotels with Boyd on my last trip. Plus, at Strat I was a new member and Strat's comp threshold may be lower. There are a number of other complexities related to comps and comp thresholds that allows this to happen (including but not limited to slot denomination, comp usage, slot hopping, prestige/popularity of property, low coin-in, location of property, new vs current member status, trip frequency, session frequency, etc). It is precisely these complexities that do not make it worth racking my brain understanding the comps they give me or the lack thereof. After all, MB threw me a weekend-comp-room bone out of the blue before my trip, and someone could say that I was overcomped based on frequent low prior play or that I had been previously undercomped or that MB needs more business, which again speaks to the complexities of comps. There is always a reason why I got the comp or did not get the comp and these reasons can be used interchangeably. The very best comps come when you are a very new or very old frequent-player member. Crazy comps come when you sign up and drop a load. For this last trip, imagine the disappointment if I were actually depending on comps.

-Another reason I have come to terms with discounted rates is that I have to wait for different cycles in the year before knowing about my next comp. I like security in knowing where my hotel will be next month. Especially since I make detailed itineraries based on where I am staying, I need to know these things. Plus, I used to love CET for their comps (I so wish I had not short-played them so in the past ) because you could book several comped rooms for several hotels for several different trips all the way into the next year (regardless of the season cycle). I thought that CET was the only company worth patronizing for this reason. But since me and CET do not get along anymore for some reason, I don’t see the point getting excited about cyclical comps. That wait would drive me nuts. That lack of patience is the same reason why I pre-pay all my shows instead of waiting to get to Vegas and potentially getting them for closer to free.

-I love Boyd but Boyd also disappointed me, but they had good reason as well. In one trip, I used 5 days of comps in The Orleans and Fremont, and so the Gold Coast comps that sat in my box disappeared probably because my comp usage was high for the time. Or, maybe because I had never used the GC comps in the year that they have been offering it. (Again, complexities). Now, I have no comps in my box (probably unintentionally low-played them too) and $12 per night offered at GC…and I’m OK with that. I thought that Boyd was most loyal to me of all slot clubs but they let me down…and it was them who finally made me depend on discounted rates.

-If by chance I went a year without going to Vegas, I could lose some or much of the comps offered me throughout the year.

-I did the math for myself mentally. I risked $1095 at Fremont (definitely more than I would usually play) as a comp experiment…on a comp for 3 nights worth no more than $120, at a hotel I had very little interest in but only slept at because it was comped. I had paid initially $120 for the new furnished rooms in Circus Circus (which happen to look way better than a lot of rooms on the Strip) for their highest rooms for 5 nights. And because I would have paid the price, I probably wouldn’t have played much at all. Thus, I would have gotten greater value, more money in my pocket, greater mental freedom, more nights, and new (Bellagio-looking) rooms if I had stayed at CC. Instead I traded it for 3 free nights in Fremont and $30 per night plus dining and playing credits at The Orleans.

-The fact is, my hotel choices tend to me so cheap that it does not warrant spending $1000 to get only $100 worth of hotel. And not only that, but getting $100 worth of hotel is only a future POSSIBILITY that may be negatively affected by your comp usage, comp thresholds, and the dawning of a full moon. Really? The idea of comps as a bonus is the right idea that I hold dearly. And I will try and NEVER again choose a comp because it’s a comp and sacrifice my experience (granted, the trip in itself was an experiment so I knew what I was up against—great experiment, great results)….unless of course it’s a comp for Saturday night.

-Again, comps are freebies...after you play what you like and ONLY what you like. I will try and NEVER again play more than 1 hour in Vegas (unless I have an intense urge). I just personally have no interest beyond that one hour. Playing for 3, 4 hours was apart of the experiment, and it was difficult—not really for financial reason, but for the pure interest factor. I love the adrenaline of slot hopping and hit-and-run even on tables. And I love buying in for peanuts and leaving with an extra buck or 2.

-Comps are like liabilities, obligations. Psychologically, unless you do not like the hotel or you do not care/worry/concern yourself about getting another comp from them, you feel internally driven to get the next comp. I would so much rather pay the $100 upfront for the hotel and decide that I do not even want to play than get it free and spend $200-300 at each time for each day or a number of days during my comped stay, far greater than the actual value of the comp.

-Now, get me right, I would not mind playing that on a regular basis if the hotel was worth it (my BR can withstand that type of play) and I had some feeling that they would give me what I was due and not overcomp me and then take it away. Some people have an understanding/consistency with their properties which makes comps kind of a given. I have dealt with several hotels in Vegas and only in my experience there is a lack of consistency.

-And very potentially, there is a lack of consistency on my end too. They should pretty much expect a lack of consistency from me because I am not always going to be in the same mood, mindset, BR, interest levels, play frequency, opportunity, streak, etc. And all these complexities in myself makes me even more understanding of the casinos themselves, their complexities, and their lack of consistency.

-Again, comps are hard. They can be hard to get. They can be easy to get, but all the while difficult to understand. They can be easy to understand but difficult to play towards. They can be easy to get, easy to understand and easy to play towards but sometimes you do not always want to play at that level. And maybe you always do play the same but are baffled by the changes in the levels or details of your comps. And maybe your comps stay exactly the same each and every time and all you have to do is wait for it to come along.

-Don’t forget the differences between slot clubs.

-What makes me relinquish interest in gaining, maintaining, and investigating comps is mostly because I still am looking for a home casino(s). I can't make that decision until I have personally explored enough. IP was my initial interest but it’s going to the wayside, so for me I need to do more investigation on somewhere(s) to call home even if it’s ends up being off-strip. Essentially, I’m still looking for a place worthy of establishing comps with. I spend my trips in multiple casinos trying to determine this. A place I am utterly comfortable. A place I feel alive and as though I am having the most fun. You see, I explore in order to find some place to be familiar, to go to over and over and over (with others only mixed in between).

-I still at least have steady comps in AC (which I gained through experimentation), and I kinda don't feel so bad being obligated over there because gaming is the main thing there. Unlike Vegas, I would not stay in AC without the free rooms; it’s just not worth it. I could do a day trip.

-Last but certainly not least, discounted rates are good and often come with free slot play, dining credits, free buffets, resort credits, free entertainment, discounts on spas, retail, etc. Often times, I get free “comps” with my discounted rates WITHOUT the play. Getting something for nothing in this case does not feel bad at all. For example, if I get $15 free slot play for a $29 night at The Orleans, that’s way better than dropping $200 to get $15 slot play and a free room there. It’s also way better than dropping $200 and getting only $5 in free slot play from your slot points. Plus, paying the discounted rates, there’s absolutely no feeling of obligation. That’s value. Some deals are so good they completely cancel out the rate of the room, which is like getting a comp for no play at all. Possibly the best.

And that’s my story of finally being OK with discounted rates

My 2 Sense: May 2012

let's get it out of the way: I love vacationing in Vegas...and I try to get out there when I can.

I am (still) a graduate student (now for Ph.D. candidacy) so I pretty much low-roll the whole way through. But I intend keeping it that way long after the smoke that is academia clears. To me, gambling is a losing proposition so I won't try to offer it much more than it plans to offer me.  Just keeping that edge as I'd like to think.

Anywho, I am writing this "trip report" sequel as a reflections piece, not so much as a narrative. I have finally taken enough trips and done enough adventures in my opinion to settle on some kernels I can take with me for the future.

This piece is in no way recommendations; just the things I see, I like, I feel, I know, I believe, etc. And it all culminates with this last trip from May 14-May 25.

A total of 11 nights spent in approximately 6 different hotels (mainly to determine which I liked best), costing $200 total , utilizing only one Saturday comp (and the rest casino rates) with a gambling budget of about $2000 (saved over several months).

In this trip I got a glimpse of of all the Strip casinos, downtown casinos, Boulder Highway casinos, Off strip casinos (west and east), Henderson casinos, Summerlin casinos, and Laughlin casinos.

Now I do stress glimpse. In many cases, I literally only glimpsed by walk by, walk-through, or drive-by. Many of the places were re-glimpsed such as downtown, Strip, and Boulder casinos which were more thoroughly walked-through in August of last year. This past trips adds to the foundations of my explorations. However, the combination of all my adventures were enough for me to make judgment of what I would revisit, redo, rethink.

This reflections piece is primarily about my last trip, yes, but it incorporates aspects of several other experiences.

The Joys of Casino Rates
1. As you all may know, I have finally made peace with casino rates.http://www.vegasmessageboard.com/for...t=finally+comp Yay me!

But this totally changed the dynamic of my trip. Feeling less obligated to play with anyone, I played less and only when, how, as long as I wanted to. Liberating indeed.  It also mightily protected my bankroll.

Future Focused Play
2. However, knowing, after long last, that I like to play downtown and off-strip helps me to adjust and focus my play for once instead of spreading it everywhere (maybe comps will be in the cards after this settlement ). Some places are just not worth playing if it constantly is bad luck.

Strictly Off-Striply
3. Remind me to play pretty much exclusively off-strip and downtown PLEASE.  If there is one thing I want to ingrain in my mind by simply writing this part is to stick to this goal. I simply do not feel the urge to pull out hundreds of dollars to play off-strip or downtown like I do on the Strip. I never win $100 off-strip or downtown and leave without it (like I do on the Strip), no matter how much more I play. I am pretty disciplined about keeping the majority of a win ($100 is always a good win to me)....at least for the session.

Zero-play "Comps"
4. I think I am going to use this website every time http://slotplaycoupons.com/ for Tropicana and Palms. Having $80 extra bucks in the beginning of the trip that felt like "free money" felt like a "comp" (though it costed $50 lol) as it was not apart of the bankroll. Must be a psychological thing. I won with them, so that's always nice!

I adore comps that I get with hotel deals, casino coupon books, and discount websites....*sigh* a zero-play comp. Something for "nothing".

Weather
5. My trip in May was drastically different from my trips in March and December not only because I stopped concerning myself with comps (freedom!) but also because it was super sunny every day. Sun is very therapeutic. Could you call me a sun worshipper?

My December trip particularly was rather cold. Staying off-strip during times like that just did not make sense. Just walking from IP to Harrahs was a blast of cold wind, balled hands, and squinting eyes. Freezing.

I stayed in December for about 7 days and in march for about 8 days and I was beginning to think that it was the length of time that was bad. No, it was the weather. I do not exactly want to take a long vacation in a cold-weather area. It defeats the purpose of vacation. I do not want to move around when it's cold  . When it's burning up, I like to be outside every second.

And during my May trip, I did not miss a beat with the sun, getting up as early as 6am on several occasions--this made for extremely fruitful and fun-filled days. I especially love Vegas mornings...so sweet and delicate lol.

So if ever I take another Dec trip, which I hope to in the future, remind me to make it a shorty. Let the spring, summer, and early fall months be my long vacays.

I have to do at least one New Years Eve before I give up on December  ...remember, adventure.

New Home
6. Like I said in my trip report, Gold Coast looks like it will be the main contender to replace IP as my home casino. Beautiful rooms (that I have problems uploading  ) and nice low limit tables with interesting side bets. Good enough food (half-off appetizers at TGIF in the evening, scrumptious desserts esp the pound cake at the buffet for an exceedingly low price, etc) and surrounded by 2 other beloved properties Palms and Rio (though each of them have a vibe I do not particularly enjoy and thus would be less interested in staying there).

Stay and Play
7. Learning that staying and playing are two very distinct actions that each hotel fits into different categories for each. I.e., circus circus--would play but would not stay. And by the way, "play" just means visit in this case and explore amenities whether that be the casino or not. Actually playing in CC casino has not been good to me over 3 trips so I am pretty much done with that. IP-stay and play. Strat-stay (only comped) and not play.

Pool Off-Stripped
8. My favorite pool used to be Caesars pool until a bad experience last trip.  It still is a gorgeous pool but I like my pools quiet. So Rio officially replaced Caesars as my fav pool.  I would go out of my way to use Rio pool.

World Buffet
9. Rio, hands down, best buffet.  I have reiterated this on numerous occasions, posts, reports, etc. It can not be overemphasized. Well worth the expensive (for a buffet) prices. This last trip was a mini-tour of buffets.Rio will officially be my dining "experience"...for now.

STEAK for Goodness Sake
10. With the mishap with Hooters and the good surprise at El Cortez Steakhouse, I am ready to take a tour of some steakhouses and other fine dining restaurants in future-future trips. Now that I am pretty settled with my dining choices--cheap eats and Rio buffet--I think I will be settled for awhile before fine dining becomes terrain I dare to explore.

Vegas Solo Excursion #6: May 2013

__Wednesday May 1, 2013__

~~McCarran~~

I cried. Bloody, bloody cried.

When I exited my school lot to head out to Vegas only 2 minutes after my last data analysis 3-hour final exam, I was ridiculously emotional and traumatized from my first year in a doctoral program.

These were not happy tears.

I had just finished an advanced data analysis course (along with 2 other courses I could barely even get to) that required 60 hours each week for weekly assignments with the forsaken STATA statistical software, and the professor seemed determined *not* to pass everyone. Almost everyone bordered a non-passing grade (B- is a fail) until half-way though the semester. I would never want to retake this course so I fought to get through.

I gained weight, lost contact with so many people, barely went out, never slept, lost my identity somewhere, hair probably fell out….

It was such an emotional roller coaster I could barely get excited about going to Vegas. Throughout my whole finals period, my fiancé teased me that “at least you are going to Vegas” when all I wanted to do was get sleep…desperately.

I was in quite the funk…but that soon lifted when I got to my home airport. My brain immediately switched and screamed “I’M GOING TO VEGAS!!!”

It seemed that all fatigue lifted.

You see, this is why I need Vegas in my life.

I could temporarily forget every other lowlife and asinine thing in real life that does not truly matter like completing my terminal degree…and focus on things that *really* matter in the grand scheme of things: my happiness.

Had to go to Vegas earlier than planned!

In my home airport, I felt at home. I felt at ease. The airport is like my natural habitat. Left at 7am. Five hours later I was in the zone as I landed in Vegas. Arrived at the lovely time of 9am—bright and early!

And everyone knows the magic that McCarran brings! However, I think I landed in terminal C because I just walked a little bit, went down some escalators and I was at the front where the limos are just like that.

It kind of took some of the magic away from me because I did not get to get smacked with the beautiful scenery of slot machines, palm trees, ostentatious advertisements, or the hustle and bustle of new Vegas entrants…the air filled with excitement.

Nevertheless I was happy to start my trip that much earlier. And well I loved the heat that smacked me as I walked into the desert sun. I considered my options and figured since I was headed to Gold Coast I would pay for the shuttle to check out all of Vegas through my window as I start my journey.

20 days ahead of me to do as I pleased…I was so ready!!

~~Gold Coast~~

Oh lovely Gold Coast!

It was a wonderful way to start off my trip because the geriatric feeling of it feels much like a nursing home and yet the large amount of tables there concentrated in the center make it much like a gambling amusement park. Thus, I could both get the rest I desperately needed and get a sneek peak at the action ahead of me.

I got what-was-once-the-premium room, or in other words the standard room, for $12 bucks a night (just as I was able to last May). I stayed for 2 nights. The room was as comfortable as always. Further analysis throughout my trip made me realize just how much I like rooms with all-white sheets.

I walked through the hallways feeling like a little kid on Christmas or like it was my birthday party…I really felt like I was sucking my thumb in a onesie…I was so hyped! I dropped my stuff in the room and went to the GC gift shop to charge some toiletries to the room. I also took some time out and bought a beautiful $10 red-and-bling cocktail ring and a gorgeous watch that serves as both a bangle and a watch. I was so happy to be there that the cashier guessed that I had just arrived! LOL I headed back to the room twirling around like a ballerina, deliriously covered in swirls of colors and butterflies…in my mind!

First thing I did after luxuriating (aka shower, nap, dress up, makeup), unpacking and repacking my purse with all my needed Vegas goodies such as my wallet, phone, charger, coupons, itinerary and tickets: I headed down to the ATM to start playing! I only took out a measly $40 bucks. And as a money management strategy, I broke it down into fives and mostly singles so I am more conscious as I am losing my money (oops! I mean playing my money).

I found myself going to the ATM lots this trip, but I would pay the $5.99 fee at the casinos and only take out $40. I’m sure I must have paid up to $120 in fees just for the ATMS because it would cost me that much more to keep my money in my room or leave to go to a cheaper ATM (but if I was close to a cheap or free atm, I would use it!).

I headed down straight for the slot machines. I wanted to spend some lazy hours playing nickel blackjack and penny keno but I just couldn’t seem to get into it. I tried for like 2 minutes and it just did not make me feel exhilarated as it did last time. Bummer. It was a good way to maintain the bankroll between ever-so-slightly bigger play.

It just seems that what was “hot” last trip does not remain “hot” in the next trip. For example a few trips ago, craps was my thing! I can’t even get into craps in recent times because I like to play the field but the field has not had as much luck for me as it did my first times playing it. Even the craps machines from Ex, Lux, and NYNY that used to favor the field barely ever have field numbers.

Just last trip I was hot for blackjack and pai gow (and a little baccarat) and I just couldn’t get into them this trip no matter how hard I tried. I play hours upon hours on BJ and pai gow last trip and I could barely get through 20 minutes of either one of them all this trip. Eons ago, my favorite slots Wheel of Fortune gave me business, now it does nothing. But it’s still my favorite! My hot slots last trip included Michael Jackson and the one with the guy and the tigers lol. These slots were so cold for me this time. Last trip I could get some continuous play on the 9cent, 15 cent and 20cent line machines but NOPE! Not this time. And I love those machines because they are real bankroll-savers whilst being able to give you a substantial win for your money!

I ended up playing a lot of the China Mystery, Mayan Chief, buffalo-wild games and all its look-alikes, the dragon/panda slot games, and HOOT LOOT! And those slot machines that are so bright, you can barely look at them…yeah those! Those were hot for me this trip.

I find Gold Coast machines just cold in general, so I only played on those machines in order to get the “free” buffet after 250 points from the American Casino Guide coupons. And you are thinking “wait, why would you play that much if you know it’s not very lucky for you?” Because the low-level (9cent, 12cent, 15cent, 20cent) bet machines at least tend to recycle your money enough to make the buffet possibly free or near free. However, it did not end up working like that.

I started with the nickel bj and penny keno which clearly could not hold my interest this time around. Then I went to my beloved 9max line X1 (aka 9cent) machines bets and just kept losing and not recycling anything so I went up to 15 cent machines and 20 cent machines…and again nothing. It was like throwing my money into a black hole.

So I upped my bet to 40 and 50 cent minimum bet machines. Still more losing…except now at an incredibly faster rate.

However, I was so hungry by the time I started playing in the casino around 2pm that I just decided to stop after I was down $20. I coughed up the cash for the $7.99 lunch instead of continuing to lose. Now, my lunch effectively cost $27.99 plus tax.

Gold Coast buffet, as you may know, is certainly nothing to write home about. I have once been known to call it indigestion-producing! However in the past year or so, either my stomach has gotten stronger or the buffet got better….verdict is still out. What I do like about it is their moist and tasty pound cake (which was not moist or tasty this time around) and their soft serve strawberry cheesecake ice cream (which was just as lovely as ever!) The alfredo pasta, green beans and garlic bread filled me so I was happy!

I left satiated and ready to play the tables. First I went to my beloved pai gow at the $10 table (with $20 bucks). Hands were like lost, push, won, lost…technically this is how the game is supposed to flow. But I had actually been winning at pai gow last trip. Its probably because I ran into a lot of sourpuss dealers at GC this time around. I usually only play with happy dealers. LOL

So I took my $5 or so dollars and went over to the BJ table and got up to $20 before losing it all. I kicked myself a little. I swore then that playing myvegas had psychologically conditioned me to play for the “BIG WIN” as I never have before instead of playing for double or triple my buy-in and moving on. Oh gamblers’ logic. If I had won, I would have praised myvegas for conditioning me to stay for the big win; or worse, I would have thought I won because I was playing strategically! I certainly left Gold Coast thinking I do not ever want to play for the BIG WIN; it costs too much; let the BIG WIN find me. Perhaps I am a reluctant gambler.

Again, I lamented the removal of the amazing LUCKY LUCKY side bet. Truly a wonder. Hope to come across it in another time and space.

~~Palms~~

This trip was like a top 100 trip. I had come to do everything that I had come to love in past trips. One of the things I had come to love is the free slot play from slotplaycoupons.com. Apparently, they discontinued the pay $25, get $40 free play at Tropicana. It kinda makes me think if the popularity of it at Tropicana got out of hand for them. However, the freeplay at Palms was still in tact.

I got it loaded on my card after having lost all my beginning money at Gold Coast. I started at my trusty Wizard of Oz lots near the players club booth but that was not paying out.

Then I went to the machine that helped me win a few free games last trip and that was not paying out. Then I skipped and hopped around on the hillbillies slots and cheers slots and lots of other 50cent minimum bet slots. I even threw in some quarter slots but nothing. I ended up with $30 but no hits which was unusual for a spin at Palms.

You know that moment when you have been losing so constantly you know that a win is around the corner? I took that $30 and feverishly shoved it into the Wheel of Fortune machines that were lucky for me the first couple of times I went to Palms. Spin, spin, spin, spin…

Absolutely jacksquat nothing. Not even a couple bars.

And I mean not even a couple bars; two little critters to entice me to think that I could actually get a third bar. I was getting desperate. Hmmm…awesome something-has-taken-over-my-brain gamblers’ logic came flooding in again and I decided, I SHOULD TRY THE WHOLE BANK OF WOF MACHINES! Absolutely great logic (sarcasm).

Went and took out an extra hundred at the ATM and slowly ran my money into the ground at several WOF slots in the bank. $100 thrown in 10 minutes …but at least I got 3 bars JUST ONCE this time around! Grrr. Palms made Gold Coast seem lucky and playable at that moment. But in my experience, Palms has been more generous to me than Gold Coast…as long as I get in and get out. Today…not so much.

~~Ellis Island~~

I hopped over from Palms, with head down but still in great spirits, to Gold Coast to wait for the shuttle that now heads to Ballys instead of Bills (due to the construction). It drops off at the side of Ballys which is a little ways from the strip if you want to be in the center of it all as soon as you get off the shuttle. If you are like me, every walk in Vegas is welcome. And every time-stopper to smell the coffee is welcome because I get to screenshot the memory in my brain bank.

I randomly decided not to head to the strip that moment and just try the restaurant specials at Ellis Island. I had not eaten so much at the GC buffet so I still had some room for a little food.

I had the American Casino Guide coupon for 50% your meal at EI restaurant or BBQ as well as the play $10 and get $10 freeplay coupon. I learned that I had to get a player’s card first in order to use the food coupon. But when I went over to the player’s card booth, I learned that I get $10 for signing up. So, in essence I was able to use the $10 free play to do the first part of the freeplay coupon and get the voucher verifying the food coupon. The second $10 would be loaded the following day. I was ecstatic because it was $20 completely free dollars (although they would be split into 2 days) after horrible losses.

I played through my $10 and had a blast for like 15 minutes. Lost everything (things were not going well for a first day out of 20) and headed over to the restaurant. Looking at the menu, I did not see anything I wanted. I asked for the BBQ restaurant then, which is completely separate.

I remember coming to EI a couple years ago, seeing how divey and packed it was and also seeing food that did not look so appetizing and just walking out. It is still divey. It is still packed. But OMG when I ordered and tasted the half chicken and half order of ribs at the BBQ restaurant, I knew I had found a gem!! They looked and tasted marvelous. Right then and there, I officially named EI my favorite BBQ ever! Like ever. Like of all time. That’s a huge deal.

The plate was $11.99 with the ACG coupon and my player’s card, and it was HUGE.

I tipped BIG time because I was just so happy. I left EI with the biggest, dumbest grin on my face. I walked over to Super 8 and asked to view a room. This trip, I was going to look at cheap places that I have never bothered to look or stay at. I was not so excited about the room’s décor so I would say it’s possible for a night but not any actual “stay” for me because room décor, as you may have learned, can really impact my mood. It at least has EI, Tuscany, westin and a nearby 7eleven going for it. It has a good location near the strip but the area around it is so seedy. A scary-feeling place to walk for a solo female, day or night.

Side bar: A taxi cab driver would tell me later in my trip that at the intersection near EI is where Tupac (the rapper) got murdered in the late 90s and there used to be parties on the anniversary of his death in Bally’s backyard but rivalry between Tupac and Biggie fans in the 90s created chaos and some subsequent deaths at these parties eventually and so Bally’s walled up it’s backyard. And now it’s just an empty, lonely, deserted lot sprinkled with people hard-on-their-luck.

From Ellis Island, I stopped inside Battistas and Stage Door to see what they look like. Stage Door is a typical dive bar. Battistas feels like a dark and moody Buca di Beppo. Like dining with the mafia. I expected cheap prices but the food started at $24 and it came with complimentary wine. I did not bother to taste though.

From there, I went from BBQ heaven to “Q” ad nauseum at the Quad.

~~The Quad~~

I was excited to see my favorite show Divas which I had lined up for 9:30pm this particular evening. I paid $30 in advance for this show on bestoflasvegas I believe. However, I was so underwhelmed by the Quad décor. It was so blah.

Also it was a worse clusterfk than ever before. Oh construction.

I picked up my tickets at the box office and headed up the escalators to the theatre, which is now a horrendous adventure to find.

I got a nice “chair massage” in my $1 massage chairs near the theatre while I waited for the show to start!

An amazing show as always; hilarious, glamorous, entertainment, thought-provoking….I have watched it now 3 or 4 times and I have yet to get enough.

I had a feeling that tonight was going to be a good night!

~~Harrahs~~

From the Quad, I walked over to Carnaval Court. I love the ease of entry especially the fact that I was wearing sneakers that evening and there is no cover charge. It was too bad though that it was not midnight yet and the DJ was not there yet. Rather some regular cover band was there. But it dawned on me that electronic music is “hot” right now so I may be setting myself up either way.

~~Caesars~~

So, I headed to the lovely Caesars Palace for Cleopatra’s Barge. An awesome lounge where you do not have to pay for bottles to find plenty of seats, and where a DJ is there from open until close, and where a party is bound to happen on the dance floor with fun, classy folk of all ages!

I tried my glam look but I still had my sneakers on. It’s so chill, you basically just walk right on through. I especially love this lounge because it’s free (even on weekends) and in luxurious surroundings!

I had a blast people-watching and grooving to the hot sounds…from my free SEAT, mind you!

I took a taxi back to GC when the night was over, and I remembered why staying off-strip is hard. The lack of the ease of movement is not so lovable. But at $24 for 2 nights at GC, the difference in cost made the extra taxi trips well worth it.

~~Rio~~

I had lost so terribly the first day at Gold Coast that I did not even bother to play the second day there. Instead of eating at their cheap buffet, I headed over to my favorite buffet of all time and space: Carnival World buffet.

I had my $5 off ACG coupon. I wanted to do the $12.99 voucher from tix4dinner but that would have required calling tix4dinner, going to the strip to pick up the voucher and coming back to Rio and also paying a $2 voucher fee, which would have come to $15.99 plus a lot of taxable hassle. I figure I would take $5 off instead from the regular $16.99 breakfast buffet at Rio and only pay $11.99 for the breakfast plus tax.

It turns out that the breakfast buffet at Rio went up and is now $20.99 regularly (with your total rewards card!) After using my ACG coupon, the cost came to $17.99 for breakfast. It is true that if you are going to pay such an astronomical price for a buffet, it should be at Rio. But I will happily say that Rio has now priced itself out of my view, especially since Ellis Island BBQ is so scrumptious. It’s weird to compare a buffet to a restaurant but I really loved Rio for it’s wide selection and the unlimited ribs. The ribs taste good and they are unlimited but EI ribs tastes amazing and it’s just the right portion! I finally understood some VMBers’ opinion that they prefer a restaurant to a buffet. If not for the high prices of buffets these days, I would not have even considered it.

Side bar: (Now, don’t you encourage me to try some fancy schmancy fine dining….at least give me another 10 years for that! This restaurant feeding (even cheaper restaurants) is cutting into my budget because one buffet was enough food for an entire day. I can not say the same for a restaurant!)

Going forward, I may do a trip with little to no gambling and little to no restaurants because these are real money-suckers! LOL I even made a list of things I most love to do besides food, gambling and exploring properties: pools, ultralounges, comedy shows, shows, soaking up the ambiance/luxury/vibe, spas, shopping (particularly at Ross). You may wonder why I am averse to splurging on a Vegas vacation. I would much prefer the ability to stay longer than to spend a lot in a short period of time. All about stretching money wherever I can.

Anyway, I loaded up on veggies, French toast and ribs. I purposely came on the cusp of breakfast and lunch to get more value for the money. The French toast was excellent. Other foods were also good. But Rio was quickly losing it’s value for me, especially since I have never really been interested in their dessert bar.

I left the buffet knowing I would not be back for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg time. And I was alright with that.

~~Palms~~

I knew I needed to take a break from playing because my butt got kicked yesterday. So I walked over from Rio to Palms and headed to Brenden theaters at the Palms to finally watch the OZ 3D, the movie. I used my pre-paid movie tickets from dinelv.com which gives you free access to IMAX, 3D and all other movies at any time for about $7.50.

I enjoyed the movie but I adored the COLORS. An eye feast.

After the movie, I headed over to the Palms pool on the first floor, which I had learned has complimentary access for women (regardless whether you are a guest or not). I just went over there to lounge and soak up the sun. I did not get into the pool.

It had an awesome vibe. However it was definitely a “young” pool. Everyone there was required to be 21 or older but everyone was between 21 and 35. Older people would walk in and seem so out of place. This is not so at several other pools in Vegas.

I loved that they played hip hop and mostly R&B at this pool. Great times!!! In fact, some of my favorite times this trip. Just literally sitting on a chair, soaking up the sun, people-watching, snapping pics, and listening to music. Glad I was “let” in to this one.

~~Planet Hollywood~~

I hopped over to Gold Coast to get on the shuttle. I really love the Rio-Palms-Gold Coast section, and I am beginning to believe it is my favorite section in Vegas currently. I used to adore the IP, Harrahs, Casino Royale,Caesars, Flamingo section but it’s rapidly becoming a nuisance. I am crazy about the Bellagio, PH,Cosmopolitan, Ballys, Paris section too but it just doesn’t feel like “home” to me probably because I have never stayed over in this section before. Perhaps I am missing out.

I arrive at Ballys and head over to PH via Paris exit. I head over to the V theater box office to pick up tickets I bought from groupon. I got Mentalist for $15 and Sin City Comedy for $12. I also bought Tribute Royalty tickets directly from V theater website for half-off for $30. And I also have $12 pre-paid tickets for Nathan burton (it’s usually free everywhere but it’s usually hard for me to get the free tickets in my experience so I pre-paid the cheapest price I saw).

I learned that PH has about 4 different theatres with their own INDIVIDUAL BOX OFFICES. What a hassle. They need to fix that. Mentalist and Tribute Royalty could be picked up from V theater. But I had to walk down to get Nathan B tickets at Saxe theater and walk the other way around and up and around to get the Sin City Comedy theater tickets. But I did it!! What an adventure (and not a fun one), and only the shows would tell if it was worth it.

~~Hooters~~

I had Kevin Lepine: Hypnosis Unleashed show lined up for me at Hooters for 7:30pm. I played the play $10, get $10 slot play coupon in ACG at Hooters before the show started. I actually started to win legitimately for the first time since arriving to Vegas on the Alladin or something machine (does a lot of rubbing on lamps for genies to open bonuses). Like several other too-bright-too-look-at slot machines, it has a chance! Marker at the top left corner of the screen that goes off randomly and almost guaranteed to grant you a bonus!. Loved the machines with CHANCE! On it.

I got up to $30 on the ten dollars. Then I got my free slot play and one on a Vegas machine (don’t remember the name) and hit for $15, so I left the casino up $45. It felt WONDERFUL.

I went to watch the pre-paid Kevin Lepine show and the venue was very intimate and the crowd was very small. Like most hypnotists in Vegas, they end up taking people off the stage who can’t concentrate enough to get hypnotized. But the cool thing about this particular showing is that someone from the audience got hypnotized instead of the people on the stage and they end up bringing up on the stage the hypnotized audience member. He was a very old man, so it’s was super entertaining. But I learned this trip that if you’ve seen one hypnotist in Vegas, you’ve seen them all.

I have watched the Marc Savard hypnotist twice and it’s almost a copy-and-paste show. The difference is Marc Savard has a far larger audience and larger stage and so the show is way more dynamic! Also, I can get Marc Savard on goldstar.com for $7.50…it was so hard to find Kevin Lepine for $40 so I just buckled and paid the $40. Later in the trip I saw Anthony Cools at Paris and he was only slightly more raunchier and I paid $30 for that. All in all, I would say get Marc Savard for $7.50 on goldstar.com close to the date you want to see it.

~~Tropicana~~

Spontaneously, I decided to use my $30 Laugh factory VIP groupon tickets (that came with 2 tickets and the second ticket I could not use for later). I went to the Tropicana box office, had no issues, and head very smoothly up to a line to wait to enter the venue.

This place is very old-school comedy club which I liked. The comedians will do a lot of calling out in the audience but not to embarrass you although a couple comedians told me I was the prettiest (which gave me a good chuckle) and then proceeded to find out I was there alone. I think this is the part that every solo who is not comfortable being solo fears. I boldly said before the audience that yes I was by myself that night (which may have made people feel bad for me as I did get one look of pity from a couple as I left the show later). I smiled at them, laughed a little internally and shook my head because my sense of freedom and fun in Vegas is unparalleled (except when I am exploring new terrain in Europe). For me, I could not care less. Just thought I would give full disclosure. This rarely happens but if you’re going to go to a comedy show solo, be prepared with ammo.

Like mostly comedy clubs (that are not improv), it was a hoot! I had a good time. A reasonable comedy show is a far better use of money overall for shows in my humble opinion.

Another taxi to GC to get a good night’s sleep had me thinking about my wallet…

~~Gold Coast~~

When I got in to rest, I was so hungry because I had only eaten at Rio. But I normally do not eat so late so I was wary of eating…but I had to! I charged the 24hour TGIFridays cheeseburger to the room, stayed up for a little, and fell into a deep, beautiful slumber….

__Friday May 3, 2013__

~~Golden Gate~~
I had 3 nights comped at GG from my last play there. The place was so old, the hallways were narrow and the floor was lumpy as if they placed carpets on uneven floors. The bathrooms still had tiles but otherwise the décor was modern. I enjoyed the room because it was free but for not much else reason.

I noticed that my mood about my Vegas trip changed drastically, as it has for rooms or properties I am not a big fan of. In fact, when I am in a ill-fit hotel for me that makes me moody, I completely start to feel like my trip is not fun anymore. I even went to the strip several times while staying downtown and it colored my experience even over there.

I realized then, after having stayed at MSS, El Cortez, Four Queens and Fremont, that downtown properties are not for me. I can stay in them for one night max, if I am willing to sacrifice the mood of my trip, if only temporarily.

Side bar: What would have helped is a mini trip while I stayed downtown. I had planned to visit Los Angeles. Even had a $2.50 roundtrip bus paid for on megabus. But it was unseasonably cold in early May in vegas and by the time I arrived to SSTT bus terminal, the main terminal was closed and it was cold outside at 10pm. I was also hungry and restless but there were no chairs outside, so I decided to go back to GG and get some rest.

After I checked into GG and went to my room, I ran downstairs to DuPars to go and charge to my room the best pancakes in America (according to me and Esquire magazine). I had a $15 dining credit and $20 free slot play with my room, which I was very excited about. I also got the shrimp cocktail for the first time with a free coupon (courtesy of Buddha). I ordered the pancakes and the spaghetti and meatballs for later because the dining credit had be used at once. The pancakes were marvelous with the melted butter poured on and the syrup. The spaghetti, like most I have tried in Vegas, was mediocre.

The shrimp, well, I did not like the waterymushiness of it or the tangy ketchup taste of it…but I was HAPPY it was free!

After putting my leftovers in my room, I went back downstairs to the casino. I took out $100, which I intended to use to see how much I could cycle through. Each and every slot I went to was dead, unlike my last trip. However, I sat on one slot machine which had a whale on it and was near the entrance and won 16 free games on a 75cent bet. I was only betting that high because the free games kept hitting on smaller denoms. I was able to win $171 from the first higher denom batch of free games, and then $40 and then $50, so I was soaring high in the sky.

After deciding that I was not going to take my LA trip, I joined the Fremont Street party! I walked through all the people. But I could not say that I “soaked in the vibe” because unlike on the strip, I could not “feel” the vibe. The current vibe of Fremont was not me. The old-fashioned way that Fremont used to be before ziplines and possibly even the big TV, probably would have been my vibe but currently it feels so annoying. I just found myself trying to get OUT of the crowd.

~~Freemont East~~

I headed over to Freemont East to finally check it out. And it was just a huge block party.

What annoyed me is that I tried to get into the bars and lounges but they had lines for days! The bouncers were artificially keeping people on a long line to give the air of exclusivity. Fail. Major Fail. I am not interested in that. I am not even interested in that on the strip, so I am definitely not taking it where I would hope to be more relaxed. One random chick pulled my hair and I turned around and gave her the eye. You know the eye. Too many drunk young wackos for my liking. And trust me, if I want to wait on line, I will gladly go to the strip.

It was a “First Friday” so apparently there are a lot of locals then, so I am not sure how this changed my experience but I never went back.

I headed over to Brass which is at the beginning of the Freemont Streeet Experience and before the Freemont East. I liked it there because it was chill and it’s multi-leveled with 4 in 1 bars. I went upstairs to a clubby style experience. But like most clubs, it’s so awkward to be in their solo…unless of course you want to hook up. Which I don’t. No where near as good as a nice ultralounge. But potentially fun with a group…with no hassle.

~~Binions~~

I made my way through the people again and found myself in Binions. I tried the burgers for the first time because I had the acg coupon. It tasted alright but not for a repeat. Not for me. It was so late eating for me so I decided to stick around for a while so I wouldn’t sleep on a full tummy.

I played their slots in the back of the burger joint and I was recycling like crazy. I finally felt like I was in-the-game. It took a while! I hit for $40 on a lobstermania slot. I hit for $30 on a texas dice slot. I hit for $100 on a betty boop slot. I hit for $20 on a hoot loot slot. I hit for $20 on a buffalo wild slot. I was having a big PARTY back there and it was basically less than a handful of us back there. Mind you, these were 20-40cent bets! I was happy. This was another highlight on my trip. Nevertheless, when I approached the slots nearer to the front of the establishment, all I did was lose. But I left with some profit anyway. I slept with a smile on my face. If DT is good for anything, it’s good for playing!

~~Golden Gate~~

I was failed this morning. The pancakes at Dupars came out so burnt-looking, I could not eat them.

I sent them back to the chef who then proceeded to give me an undercooked pancake which is the worst. A second time I sent it back.

By the third time, it tasted an awful lot like a normal pancake. Nothing extra spectacular about it like I had come to expect from Dupars, so I charged it to my room, tipped big, and left the rest of the entire pancake on my plate.

It sucks when you can’t enjoy things as you once did.

However, I did learn that I could order just one pancake from Dupars for $3 instead of ordering a short stack for $6. And one pancake at Dupars is so big that you may only need one.

~~Four Queens~~

I walked over to Four Queens to use my BOGO coupon from ACG. I ordered pancakes and ribs. Might as well taste both. The pancakes were just lovely and much lighter and smaller Dupars. The house salad and dressing were awesome. The ribs were average but tasty. I took some leftovers for later. The leftovers seemed to be piling up and I was not eating them. LOL.

I tried to do the “get $10 free play” for showing a competing players club card at FQ but they said you can only do that once. Like ever. Not once a year. Once in the lifetime of your membership lol.

What sucks is that FQ is like a very playable, recyclable casino and yet I did not even play here this trip.

~~Longhorn~~

Before heading out to Boulder, I stop in the City Center Motel to see if it would ever be worthwhile to stay in. It right next to EC but its in a seedy area. It has potential but it’s usually $50. Some super bowl weekend, it will make a world of sense. It looks comfortable but otherwise, no go.

I get on the BHX and I run to the Longhorn $2 BJ table when I arrive. I crave for the days when there was $1 BJ at Sahara (never got to experience those days) or even when I could play $1 BJ at Ballys in Atlantic City not too long ago. Playing $1 BJ on a machine feels so much more rigged and I can’t chat with a dealer and make sure he gives me the right cards lol.

I had not been back to Longhorn since 2011 when I lost $20 in 20 seconds on the fastest and highest-number-of-blackjacks blackjack dealer of all time despite it being a $2 table. It’s funny, because even though the dealer was slower and the dealer only had three blackjacks in the a row this time, the same thing repeated. $20 taken away in under 5 minutes. And I vowed not to waste my time coming all the way out to Boulder to lose at Longhorn. You would think I would be able to stay in the game a little longer. Psssh! I greatly believe that casinos are not lucky or unlucky; rather, your lucky casino can be my unlucky casino and vice versa.

~~Ballys~~

I took the 202 from Sam’s Town and headed to the strip. I walked on the strip and despite some winnings downtown, it seems the fact that I would head back to stay downtown and clouded my Vegasy mood. You know, some people feel Vegasy when they are downtown. I feel like I am not in Vegas when I am downtown. All that onesie ballerina stuff was out the window. I could not even enjoy the vibe and the people around me as I walked the strip.

I decided to use my $10 LA Comedy show groupon ticket to hopefully gain some aliveness. I did not gain aliveness; at least not Vegas aliveness. But I did have a lot of fun!

__Sunday May 5, 2013__

*Happy Cinco de Mayo!*

~~Four Queens~~

I came back for pancakes. And just like Dupar’s, the second time the pancakes just tasted mediocre. In reality, I do not like pancakes because they often have this weird flour taste but when it’s made well, it’s incredibly enjoyable. I left the pancakes on the table because it just tasted so blah. Paid and tipped.

~~Boulder Station~~

This would be my first time to visit Boulder Station. It was dark and moody inside so I could not see myself coming back. But the pai gow was $5 so I played $20 bucks and lost it very quickly. I went over to BJ and lost over there too, so I was in and out of Boulder in less than 15 minutes.

~~Arizona Charlie Boulder~~

I walked from Boulder to Arizona Charlie, and I have never felt so unsafe in Vegas. Lots of open space, people living under cement, and people asking you for money who actually look like they might harm you if you did not. But I kept my wits about me, was firm and kind. No one followed me, Thank God. Even the BJ dealer at AZ Boulder told me not to walk in the area at night. It was a nice walk though. Never again, however.

I was able to play $5 pai gow and $1 roulette here for at least an hour. They also had a packed $3 bj table. 7-eleven was next door for a solid convenience store. I also got to view the room here. It does feel a tad unsafe in the area but the courtyard is beautiful and the room is bright and spacious. I would stay here on the right busy night. The price is right and for comfort it looks great…but comfort level with the whole package? So-so.

~~Joker’s Wild~~

I took the BHX and 402 to Joker’s Wild, which was a horrible idea because Joker’s Wild is in the middle of nowhere like it’s surrounded by desert!

And worse, the buses that stop there come every hour so heaven forbid I miss the last bus back. Yikes! Bad idea.

But at least good in the sense that I got to see it for the first (and probably last) time.

I had great fun with a group at the table with an awesome dealer even though we mostly lost. I lost my money ($20) on BJ in 20 minutes which seemed like a good record this trip.

The $1 craps table was too packed even though this was a clearly isolated establishment at least on the outside. On the inside it was a locals party. Some of the most smiles and laughter I had seen all trip!

Waiting outside in the dark surrounded by desert was the second most frightening thing I have ever experienced in Vegas. The bus miraculously came 20 minutes later; I was not sure when it would come. And it took a most roundabout way to the SSTT terminal that I felt it was the 3rd most frightening experience in Vegas thus far.

~~MGM~~

I took the express bus to Ross near MGM. I was looking for new cute hand luggage, flip flops and new sneakers. I found good flip flops.

~~Circus Circus~~

Then, I went to the Ross near Circus Circus. I found some more flip flops there but no clothes, luggage or sneakers that were worthwhile.

__Monday May 6, 2013__

~~Golden Gate~~

Some last pancakes to remember GG by. It was good this time! Never did get back to any leftovers.

~~Luxor~~

Leaving downtown, I felt this much happier! I almost kissed the ground of the strip! I took a crazy number of photographs. I took pictures outside and inside of Luxor because it was truly exquisite.

Four days in the upgraded tower room free here through myvegas. I am so glad I joined this game when I did.

I was enchanted by the fact that Luxor was like an Egyptian museum but I did not care for the room very much. It made me moody. It may have been the blue colors—not my style.

I was actually so moody at Luxor, I spent much of my time in the room. If you have read my trip reports before, I usually stay in a room that makes me moody. Why? Because I do not have the energy to get up and do anything. Also exiting Luxor was such a hassle because I had to go through Excalibur which is even more of a hassle just to go through NYNY and then finally MGM just to get to the bus stop. Arrrgggh!

I think it was much easier staying inside.

I was glad that I had to pay no resort fee and incidental deposit is not required at Luxor, so this was the freest free room I had ever received. I guess staying in the room was great because I really got my value’s worth! LOL

I got internet, 6 free drink coupons that I received just for asking and a booklet worth of food court coupons. Uhh…..score!

I really tried to like Luxor but nothing was working. I played on several of their dead machines. I shopped in their gift shops and did not find anything. I looked at their terrible buffet. I went to their food court and found the nathan’s fries a little burned (but at least they had coupons for everything in their food court in the booklet you get at check-in and on the sheets of paper that come on the food tray). One thing I can stand about Luxor are the shows and attractions. They have some really good, solid ones. And I am so excited about jabbawockeez being there. Too bad I do not like the hotel.

I went and got a free drink (Shirley temple lol) with my coupon and called it a night.

__Tuesday May 7, 2013__

~~Luxor~~
I spent several hours on the internet because up until then I had not had a hotel with internet.

At Luxor I did not feel like doing much of anything and it felt like such a hassle to get up and do anything.

I was also so nervous for my very first VMB meetup. There was one planned for the interop conference.

~~Mandalay Bay~~

I headed over to Eyecandy, and I saw a woman hitting on a $5 WOF several times. Unfortunately I was waiting for the time of the meetup and watching this woman was making me want to gamble when I know that MB has been pretty dead to me for a couple years now.

I decide to take out $100 from the ATM while I wait. I go around to several slot machines betting max bet and getting nothing at all. In 15 minutes, it was all gone. Nothing to show for it.

After careful calculation, I had found that I had lost $264 in the first 24 hours of playing on the strip. This made me slow my roll. It had already been 5 days where I did not lose that much money, so the strip is a real black hole especially on the south side.

I walked into eyecandy, sat down, and saw lots of professionally dressed people in groups and I was too shy to walk up to them. I was dressed extremely casually with flip flops, thinking wow VMBers are probably super professional! So I left.

I went away for like 30 minutes working up the courage to go ask the groups of people who were there if they were VMBers, as they had already seen me sitting by myself in there and probably thought it would be weird if I came in and left just like that.

When I got bold enough to do it, I walked right up to the two groups and found that NONE of them were VMBers. Which made me feel even more weird because then no VMBers showed up except me!

Luckily, shaggybroiler called out to me if I was from VMB…and so it began!

I had not seen any of them until now. I greeted retiredsoccermom and her husband, shaggy broiler and his friend, and synthpop (sp?)…they all seemed down-to-earth, thank God! We chatted, we had a great time but an hour or so later they had to leave for their conference. It was wonderful meeting you all! I even ran into a couple of you at other properties while we were out there which is a totally different experience for me. Great times!

~~Luxor~~

Back to the room to decompress. Lots of chilling in the room. Luxor had a nice feature on their TV that allowed me to play soothing water or rainforest sounds in the room which was heavenly.

__Wednesday May 8, 2013__

~~Luxor~~
I would wake up to early morning House of Payne and Fresh Prince of Bel-air re-runs. It’s the most TV I have watched in years. I had a blast.

I stopped by the pool to check it out before I left tomorrow. It was fair. Nice space. Good lounging areas. But a lot of the pools were closed off. I laid out in the sun without getting the pool for about an hour.

I checked the spa and gym and they were alright.

LadyFortuna then messaged me that there was another meetup at Times Square in NYNY.

I thought WOW! My second VMB meetup in less than 48 hours. I had not met her yet and I greatly appreciated her for starting the solo fest activities, so I wanted to come by.

~~Excalibur~~

I stopped first at the food court because I like theirs better and got a cinnabon.

~~New York New York~~

During this meetup, I met atom, vegasnut, Lady Fortuna and booker and his friends. An awesome bunch. Vegasnut pointed out to me that the live jazz player at the lounge was not actually playing live but was playing a pre-recorded music. It was funny. We had a wonderful chat and then ate at the burger bar. Booker insisted that he would cover the tab, which was really nice of him.

~~Luxor~~

I took it down early and listened to my relaxing sounds. Today was a good day.

__Thursday May 9, 2013__

~~Excalibur~~

After some internet surfing, TV-watching and smooth-sounds-hearing in my Luxor room, I went over to Ex to eat a meal in the food court. Popeyes biscuits and chicken was a score! Strip food is too expensive to ignore such a nice food court.

~~Ellis Island~~

Lady Fortuna and I met up to get ready to go to Hakkasan. But before then, we decided to eat at EI for her first time. The BBQ was still scrumptious and she called it “liquor” which means awesome in dutch land. She even won on VP using her free $10 slot play.

Walking back we saw a homeless man whom she gave her leftovers too and he graciously appreciated it. She could not get to her ribs so that man had a great dinner that night.

~~Gold Coast~~

We took the Ballys shuttle to Gold Coast for her first time to see this side of Vegas. She learned craps on the way.

~~Rio~~

Then we went inside Rio for her to view the buffet. She would later go with Vegasnut to check it out.

~~Monte Carlo~~

Then we hung out in Monte Carlo getting ready and pre-gaming. But then I dropped the bombshell that Hakkasan is getting terrible reviews online. No one wants to return. Apparently a case of feeling-myself syndrome at MGM a little *too* early. They might have even asked us women for $50 cover. Yikess!! HELLo NO! So we just stayed at MC for a while talking. When we finally decided to leave, we did some dancing at the MC bar near the front. People were looking at us and we did not care. They knew we were having fun, and one of the MC employees came up to us with ultralounge passes but we wanted to *explore the night*!

~~Hawaiian Marketplace~~

So we walked the strip trying to get into something instead of Hakkasan. But by the time we left around 1or 2 am, some of the ultralounges like Cleopatra’s barge were close. We decided to go watch karaoke when we did the runaround too many times. It was fun and alive.

There was a woman there that danced like her life depended on it to every song no matter how fast or slow…all by herself. She would booty pop and drop-it-like-it’s-hot and do splits and stand on her head. We identified her as a current stripper. LOL One guy who sang Micheal Jackson could really sing and a lot of the singers did a good job. But we took it in early because I was not comfortable with the seating area. Not a very cozy place and as you can tell, I am all about feeling comfy.

~~Monte Carlo~~

We headed back to MC to play slots. She hit a hundred or more on a 30cent bet. I was staying stable until I decided to play roulette but I was so tired. She was not liking the late-night drink service because it was virtually non-existent. I left around 3 or 4 am but Vegasnut came to MC and they played lots of games into the morning!

~~Luxor~~

I played on some 9cent machines with $5 and it actually got recycled for about an hour. And I felt so happy! It was a good way to end off the trip at Luxor.

__Friday May 10, 2013__

~~Days Inn Wild Wild West~~

I was so happy to check out of Luxor. Pretty boring place at least for me.

I would later learn that WWW has prostitutes and truckers from dewey. Could I have been mistaken for a prostitute perhaps? Shudder at the thought. That’s what I worried most about: being seen solo there. Other than that, I LOVE THE PLACE! I was so excited to be there. It must be because they have the white-on-white sheets. Not entirely sure but it made my weekend. I was on the cloud just as I had been when I arrived. I tell ya, the hotel makes the difference for me!

I did my laundry while playing BJ and slots. Then I walked to the strip.

~~Planet Hollywood~~

I went to see Tribute Royalty and I had a blast at this show! It’s like Legends in Concert except it only has Elvis, MJ and GAGA. Phenomenal show.

~~Mirage~~
I headed over to the box office to pick up my tickets for Boyz II Men. I got free tickets through myvegas.

Before the show, I played on the slots and lost miserably although I started out with a small win on one of the slots.

The show was so amazingly wonderful! It has been given 5 stars across the board on yelp. I not only wanted to see the show again; I was determined to see it again during this trip.

After the show, euphoria washed over me! I waited at the slots people-watching until the next VMB meetup at Carnaval Court which I thought started at 10pm. I later learned it started at 8pm.

~~Flamingo~~
I looked all over Margaritaville and could not find any one. I learned that they had been here since 8pm with the intention of eating.

~~Harrahs~~

Then I contacted them while I waited outside of Carnaval Court because they were charging $10 that night and I was not intending on paying. No one wanted to pay either.

~~Caesars~~
When I finally caught up with the group (atom, vegasnut and lady fortuna), we decided to see Vegasnut’s suite atCaesars Palace with the view of the Bellagio fountains. Perfect view! Fun times chatting and taking photographs. We all viewed Cleopatra’s Barge and then we called it a night.

~~WWW~~
That night I played $40 at BJ and hit a good run for about 2 hours and left at $90. What a day!

__Saturday May 11, 2013__

~~WWW~~

I ate my free breakfast at Dennys on-property (you get a free breakfast for every night you stay). It was yummy. I also had pancake puppy sundae which is also yummy and $2. I might have put $5 in the slots that day.

~~Paris~~
I saw Anthony Cools and thought he was alright. You see one hypnotist (again), you have seen them all.

~~Harrahs~~
There was no cover this night and I went to Carnaval Court!

~~Caesars~~
I also hopped over to Cleopatra’s Barge!

__Sunday May 12, 2013__

*Happy Mother’s Day!*

~~Excalibur~~
Leaving WWW was sad because I enjoyed it. Even had a free breakfast at Dennys before I left. Checked intoExcalibur and I was given a view room! So excited!! Took lots of photos.

~~Peppermill~~
Met up with travelfiend, vegasnut, lady fortuna for drinks in the lounge and a meal in the restaurant. Vegasnut was sweet to cover my drink! I ate chicken parm and tasted their pancake and nothing was spectacular. But it was nice spending time with all of them. Just a really nice, down-to-earth group.

~~Riviera~~
At the Riviera, the group met with Steve-o-rama! A nice guy. We had a blast at the Riviera comedy show.

Even Vegasnut who does not typically like comedy shows really enjoyed it. It’s still a favorite of mine and I have been 4 times now. Plus, I was able to get travelfiend, vegasnut, lady and I in all for free with my two ACGcoupons (we just had to pretend that we were not all together…only 2 per coupon). They were blown away by the value! Travelfiend even wondered how they could afford to offer this deal. I was honored to provide for the group what I am best known for: value for no money! LOL

After the show, we all had a great big chat for hours at the Riviera food court. And guess who showed up? Dewey! Apparently he meant to meet with us at the Peppermill after the show but had not known that the restaurant was moved to before the show. He talked about his former job and it was quite interesting to me what he had accomplished. Travelfiend was kind enough to drive the strip people back to their places.

It was a great night!

__Monday May 13, 2013__

~~Excalibur~~
I ordered some more Boyz II Men tickets from MyVegas and a ticket to Thunder from down Under! I told Vegasnut I was a prude in front of the group the prior night and then I had to tell everyone I was going to Thunder! It was a great joke.

~~Planet Hollywood~~

Met up with Dewey and Lady fortuna for a buffet at Spice Market. Dewey offered to cover! Yay! So nice of him. He had a number of coupons but even after all of that Total Rewards still has significantly increased their rates!

We really had a great meal. I really loved the rich mac and cheese. They loved the lamb! We even ran into dewey’s bro-in-law.

~~Flamingo~~

Afterwards we went to the Flamingo to play 1-2 limit limit poker. I watched Dewey play. It was Lady Fortuna’s first time playing live poker and she was stealing the table. Oh Lady luck!! After an hour or so, I had to go in order to catch my show. It was fun while it lasted. They continued to play as they were going to try salsa later at Eastside Cannery.

~~Excalibur~~
Whoooohooooo!!!!! The boys were out tonight!! We could not take any photographs but honey, they were looking wonderful. They did get nude but did not show the front. Lots of dancing. Very entertaining. But especially wonderful for bachelorette parties I believe because they randomly carry women from the audience (and usually grind them LOL) and it’s usually women with their dresses and TIARAS ON!!

__Tuesday May 14, 2013__

~~Excalibur~~
Food court again. Then I lounged at the pool. For a 3rd time, I did not even get into a pool which was weird of me. But I certainly enjoyed the hot sun.

~~New York New York~~
I went over to attend the meet up at Times Square and I did not see any one. I told myself not to get lured intoNYNY slots but I always do and I always lose.

This time I hit a slot (the ones too bright for eyes) that was clearly speaking in Chinese and on a 30cent spin, I won $80. It had a chance marker! Then, I won $30 on the machine next door. I tried to message Lady fortuna but my phone was not sending the message for some reason.

I so desperately wanted to leave NYNY before I lost again. I wanted to finally break the NYNY curse! I felt like I was losing ground. I collected my money and left. And I was so excited I could have kissed the ground.. I finally broke the curse! Yipppeee! Skippee!!

What it also means is that I missed the meet up. : ( Bummer.

~~Harrahs~~

I played some slots at Harrahs and watched the Million Dollar Quartet. I did not enjoy this musical because they never changed the set, costumes, characters, or plot. It took place on one single night and there is far too little acting. The venue also sucks. The music was nice though….if you like concerts and not musicals.

I took another trip to Carnaval Court and headed back for rest.

__Wednesday May 15, 2013__

~~Excalibur~~

I got a lunch and Buca di Beppo and the rigatoni did not taste as good as it did before.

~~Mandalay Bay~~
I ventured out a little bit today, taking pictures in the beautiful front area of Mandalay Bay.

Then, I went to the Mandalay Spa. I had a great time here. It was actually my first time entering water since getting to Vegas. I would say it is my favorite spa for the spa amenities, not for services (as I am yet to indulge in this part of the spas), probably because the area is the most beautiful spa to me.

~~Crestwood Suites~~

In the quest to know places I can go during busy weekends, I explored the hotels near the outlets near the southern part of the strip. I hopped on the Express bus from Mandalay Bay.

Crestwood suites has a fridge, stove, sink, microwave and oven so it’s well-equipped for actual “living” which I think people were actually doing here.

~~Manor Suites~~

The same is true of Manor Suites, although the clientele here may have more dire situations. Extended-stays I believe they call these places. I really love the décor of the Manor Suites but I saw quite a few people who looked like homeless people with no home or even a place to stay.

~~Tahiti Village Resort and Spa~~
This is a beautiful, luxurious timeshare that should not be looked over. And I do intend to stay here when the going gets tough.

The suites are large and spacious with a full kitchen for the 2 bedroom and a kitchenette for the 1 bedroom. You truly do feel transported into an island. My favorite part of the resort is the pool. Phenomenal: sand beach in one, nice spa, awesome landscaping, and there are free tubes for the lazy river. They also have their own shuttle to the strip which goes to NYNY and Mirage but it does require a room key. Note that the spa is only for services and does not have a sauna, steam room or Jacuzzi.

One day. One day.

~~The Quad~~

From Excalibur, I was going over to my once-beloved property. I was giving it a second chance. I paid $16 for the night. No harassment at check in. Relatively quick line. No early check in fees because I booked through my gold card on the website. Sleeping area seemed beautiful and fine and clean. I relived some of my initial magic and wonder regarding my once-favorite property. But the bathroom was once again a horrendous mess. I called the housekeeping to clean it and redecided to give it a rest at the Quad.

~~Planet Hollywood~~

A 4pm Nathan Burton show was spectacular in a very I-would-only-see-it-once way. Definitely worth one trip.

A 7:30pm Mentalist Show was mind-blowing and I was constantly trying to figure out how he was able to tell people’s stories. But I would certainly come back to watch this show just to study him and how he does what he does. Very good show.

A 9pm Sin City Comedy show started off with the waitress harassing me to get a drink because apparently one drink was required with every ticket. And I kept telling her I paid for the show and that it was not free for me so why would a drink be required? She insisted that I needed to pay for a drink. I told her, I do not intend on paying for a drink. She told me she would come back but she never did. If she came back, I would insist I did not want a drink. Why would I pay for a drink when no other comedy show requires that? This show had women come and do old-style burlesque in-between comedy acts. Certainly not something that men will get “hot” over considering women are probably more scantily clad at an average pool in Vegas. Nice dancing though. And the comedy was so recycled (though entertaining), people barely clapped at the end. Eh, pass it.

~~Baymont Inn and Suites (palos verdes)~~

This is a great spot. I found it for $32 on a Friday night. It is very nice and spacious. It comes with wifi. Right outside of it is a bus stop to the strip. There is a complimentary, simple breakfast. It is also near Terribles and a Buca di Beppo restaurant. It had white on white sheets but the floor reminded me of stratosphere so it put me in a slight mood. I laid out in the sun near the pool.

Then I took a bus over to the Nigerian cuisine restaurant I had tasted last. The area was ever more sketchy than I remembered (even in the day time). The cat calls were very scary. Too aggressive. I went to the restaurant and learned there were new owners. They barely had any of the items on the menu and the food tasted no where near as good. So sad because I thought I had found a good spot!

~~Motel 6~~

I discovered a strip of motels near MGM, which will probably be hard to walk around at night. But they are near Hooters and some convenience stores. I viewed all of them. I did not like this one because the floor was hardwood.

~~America’s Best Value Inn~~

I liked the décor of this one.

~~Howard Johnson~~

I did not like the décor of this one.

~~Desert Rose Resort~~

Gorgeous place! A timeshare.

~~Mirage~~

I went to see Boyz II Men a second time. I was even upgraded to closer seats just by asking! And while it was still as magical as the first time, I was hurt this time because I still was not able to get a rose. *tear*

__Saturday May 18, 2013__

~~LVH~~

I checked in here because it was $23 for a Saturday night through booking.com. This place may be dated but it’s almost as good as being on the strip because of the monorail.

I did not like the décor of the room so it’s not a place I can stand for more than one night. But for one night, especially a weekend night for about $20 bucks, I will come back again and again.

I toured the hotel. I was not impressed by anything here except for the quaint pool, the size of the basic room and the ease of movement.

~~Mermaids~~
Got fried oreos again. Yummy.

~~Stratosphere~~
Got Vegas hand luggage.

~~Gold Coast~~
I went and dropped $120 in an hour between pai gow and BJ. I was betting anywhere from $5 to $25 dollars. I called the pit boss after I left and they had me down for $5 at BJ and nothing for pai gow for a total of 30 minutes. I had finally had it with GC. They never have the correct record of my play and so I decided to toss a courtesy comp there for the following day out of the window and instead stay at Hooters.

~~Palms~~

I ate at the food court and was given half off at Nathans. I used my dinelv passes to get into the 3D Great Gatsby movie on a Saturday night while it was new. The boy behind the counter was stunned by the flexibility of the pass. The movie was nothing crazy but it was certainly a beauty to the eye. I also love Leo Dicaprio….excellence. Pure excellence.

__Sunday May 19, 2013__

~~Hooters~~
I checked into Hooters. I paid $39 but $15 resort fee in order to be near MGM for the billboard awards. Hooters room was clean but the bathroom nuh-uh. I had the maid come and clean it. I may steer clear of this place for a little while.

~~MGM~~

I ate at MGM buffet with myvegas, and it is certainly not worth paying for.

I played a lot at MGM and could cycle through a little but mostly lost.
I was prepared for the Billboard awards, all dressed up in heels.

The show itself was really fun. But the high-impact moment of last year’s show was the whitney Houston tribute. It was pretty cool that Madonna showed up randomly. I loved the performances especially Selena Gomez. It was really sad and distasteful when a large part of the crowd booed Justin Beiber. But all in all, I enjoyed myself and would probably do it again.

That night I walked by hakassan and it was not opened yet so I decided to walk the strip.

~~Cosmopolitan~~

I walked over to see marquee but it was an invite-only night. So waited around and people-watched until the DJ came at midnight at Chandelier but the DJ never came. I walked over to Bond and the vibe was right but the space was too small.

~~Bellagio~~
I walked over to B, thinking that I may see celebrities over there. I was given a pass to the Bank outside and so I waited on line. But the bouncer came over and said the charge was $100 cover because Bruno mars was there and it was already packed. I got out of line and gave up on nightlife…for the night. I needed to find the tram but could not find it. I asked one guy and then he began to follow me.

I told him I’m not like that. He said What happens in Vegas. I said not for everybody. He was not aggressive at all but he would not stop following me, so I stopped at a slot machine in clear sight of security. I did not think he was harmful at all but just in case he may have been actually following me….This is the closest I have ever been to harassment in Vegas. Pretty harmless I guess.

I decided to play the slot machine (Mayan Chief) in front of me until he was out of sight. I spun it 10 times at 30cents before hearing BONG! BONG! BONG! BONG! Over and over. I had hit for 80 free games!!! What a feeling. The young man just helped me out! Best feeling all trip.

I just got to sit and watch 80 free games. It was about time my time came. I won $130 on 30 cents. Sweeeeeet!

~~Hooters~~

I proceeded to lose all my winnings when I got back to Hooters. Even on my Alladin machine and my too-bright-for-eyes slot machines!! And again I blamed myvegas for making me go for the big win.

It was time to pack up and go home…for the night!

__Monday May 20, 2013__

~~Palace Station~~
I checked in because I have never stayed here but it always seemed like a good bargain. The room was much likeImperial Palace except with darker colors in the courtyard rooms. It was clean. The restaurants seemed blah. I could not get much luck on the slots although I saw some others doing well.

I used the strip shuttle to get to fashion show mall.

I ate at their massive food court. I wanted to note for myself that their Chinese chicken and GW cheesesteaks’ chicken wraps with gw sauce is to die for! Ok, maybe not that serious but I hope to remember them next time.

~~Wynn~~
I walked into this casino and it was a DREAMLAND of winning for me. Every slot I touched here was gold. I started off my visit here with a $110 win on a HOOT LOOT machines and then proceeded to get a small win on almost every machine I played. Leaving there with $190 in wins. Also every where I turned here, people were on crazy bonuses. The getting was good!

~~Ellis Island~~

If there was something to remember Vegas by, it was EI BBQ. I ate here once again. I was in BBQ heaven.

~~Rio~~
While I waited for my final show in Las Vegas for a long time, I went to the pool for the first time my whole trip…to actually take a dip! Ahhhhh! Wasn’t it wonderful to finally be at my favorite pool in Vegas! It is truly nice for people of all ages. There is a pool the children usually gravitate towards. There is a Voo pool which is the party pool for the young folk and then there is the warm—anything and any one goes pool! There is also a cold pool. There are 3 secluded spas which have the best landscaping. I really enjoyed this. I made sure to take mental shots in my mind so I could store it in my memory until my next trip.

Then, I saw MJ Live show. It was not as good as I remembered it. But it was relatively enjoyable. I was hoping to get some nightlife in before I left but I was simply too tired and I taxied it back to my place.

__Tuesday May 21, 2013__

~~Palace Station~~
I left early in the morning using the PS airport shuttle and I was determined to come back in 2 years! So far, I’m laughing at myself……for even coming up with such a ludicrous idea hahaha. Let's see.

Oh yeah...and I just happened to pass my data analysis course with an A-.
